In a nutshell, the Top Home Chef competition is a unique event where 50 volunteer chefs prepare the meal for Gala attendees. Chefs will prepare about 80 - 100 small portions of a dish of their choosing, which will be served at the Gala on April 28th, 2018.

Guests will have the opportunity to sample and judge the food along with a panel of celebrity judges. Entries will be categorized by Appetizers, Mains and Desserts and our celebrity judges will be Chef D, Dana Short, Nick Benninger and Chef Scotty.

Dana Shortt

Dana Shortt is a mother of two and the owner of Dana Shortt Gourmet and Gifts in Waterloo. The shop is a boutique-style gourmet food store specializing in hand crafted prepared meals, an olive oil and Dana Shorttbalsamic vinegar tasting bar, gift baskets and quality chocolates from local suppliers.

I opened the store in 2004 because I wanted to create delicious and unique dishes for people to enjoy that they couldn’t get anywhere else, with everything made by hand, using great quality ingredients and featuring local flavours whenever possible.

My goal in opening Dana Shortt Gourmet and Gifts was not to create another food and gift shop; it was to curate a unique customer experience”.

Dana Shortt received her formal culinary training at George Brown College. Along with her Culinary Management Diploma, she also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel and Food Administration from the University of Guelph.

Nick Benninger

Nick found his calling to become a Chef at the age of 16 working at a summer camp in northern Ontario. He fell in love with the kitchen and cooking and since then has “rooted” his career in many of the philosophes he learned in that first encounter with food service.  Nick BenningerAfter attending George Brown College Nick completed his apprenticeship working at kitchens throughout Ontario and finally settling back down in his hometown of Kitchener-Waterloo.

In 2008 Nick opened Uptown 21 with his wife Natalie and in 2013 the couple went on to open Taco Farm. Uptown 21 has been included in Where to Eat Canada every year since it opened, and recently Taco Farm was featured on the television show You Gotta Eat Here!

In 2016 Nick added two landmark restaurants: Marbles Restaurant and Harmony Lunch to the portfolio of kitchens that he is managing in uptown Waterloo. Having grown his brand to 4 establishments it only made sense to create an umbrella company. So in 2017, the Fat Sparrow Group was born.

Nick has twice appeared on the Food Network, and in 2013 his contribution to the culinary community was recognized in Waterloo Region Record’s annual 40 under 40.

Nick’s newest project is an independently made food show showcasing the highly under celebrated 519 food scene called Nick and Taylor Make A Food Show!

An early adopter and leader in the local food movement, Nick is proud to showcase the cornucopia of great ingredients and produce found right here in Waterloo Region.

Chef Scotty

Chef Scotty began his culinary aspirations by graduating from chef school in 2003, after almost
twenty years in the automotive industry. Excited about this next chapter, his hard work and Chef Scottydesire to learn from some of the area’s amazing food destinations, such as Dana Shortt Gourmet, Wildcraft Wherever, Appetizingly Yours, he quickly established himself as a very passionate local chef with a love for food. In 2013, he decided to launch his own business, ChefScottyCooks, which includes catering and his “BistroTour” Food Truck. The truck has been seen at festivals and special events around the region, but his specialty is his unique culinary excursions. He can actually take passengers right on the truck to visit and tour local craft breweries, cideries or distilleries. As well, he ventures to the Niagara region for some amazing winery tours. They even come complete with a fully served dinner at a chef’s table inside the truck itself.

Chef Scotty has also been privileged to be a part-time culinary instructor through the Conestoga College Program since 2012. The thought of helping young aspiring chefs start their culinary careers is something that he is naturally drawn to. In late 2016, Chef Scotty collaborated with Guelph’s own Dixon’s Distilled Spirits to produce his first bottled BBQ sauce which is now for sale in some of the area’s top gourmet food stores. Earlier this year he added a second sauce in which he teamed up with Wellington Brewery, also out of Guelph. He is currently in discussions with several other local producers to build on his line of Craft Sauces. Look for more to come soon… When you get a chance to see Chef Scotty, always remember his tag line...
